Niger, a successful experience!

NIAMEY - Within the framework of the implementation of WOSM's strategic priority number 7 (Scouting's Profile), the Association des Scouts du Niger adopted a multi-level partnership approach as a means to achieve this objective. Thus, since 2003 to date, this West African NSO boasts of encouraging results in the following fields: partnership with the media, national leadership, international partnerships and in terms of its impact in society.

Within the framework of partnership with the media, the Association obtained the following results, inter alia:

  • Incorporation of the journalists and press attachés into the national executive team. This was also done at the district/area level of Scout leadership (The result: easy access of Scouts of Niger to the media. They participate in interviews and in the debates concerning the youth).
  • An induction course for the new members and public/private media (The result: an active participation of the public and private media and an extensive media coverage of the activity by public and private TV and radio stations).
  • Participation in the solidarity caravan aimed at supporting the victims of Agadez floods (The result: 34 scouts joined the caravan and all the stages until Agadez were covered by the media).

With regard to the national leadership, the Association of Scouts of Niger holds a leadership role within several networks and civil society groups in Niger, namely: COPIL, UNICEF, Network of Actors in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS (RAIL/IST/SIDA), REPTNI and the Network of Young Nigerians for the MDGs. Moreover, the Association enjoys a good relationship with the Ministry for youth and with the Catholic Mission.

Lastly, in terms of international partnership, there exists international scout solidarity with Scout associations from Europe, Asia, Arab and Africa Regions. Thanks to the partnership with the Guides and Scouts of Luxembourg, there was a construction of a centre (meeting room, dormitories, offices, Internet room and a multipurpose hall) and regular exchanges between Luxembourg leaders and youth and Nigerian youth and leaders.
