World Scout Bureau planning meeting in Kandersteg

The Executive Directors' Team of the World Scout Bureau (WSB) comprises the Secretary General Luc Panissod and the 8 Executive Directors in the various WSB Offices around the world, including the six Regional Directors. The Team meets every six months to assess progress and to plan future work.

The latest meeting was held at the Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland from 12 to 17 April. On this occasion, the meeting was extended to include virtually all Executives of the WSB from all its Offices. The main theme of the meeting was the preparation of the upcoming World Scout Conference in January 2011 and the revitalisation of the Strategy for Scouting, with a particular focus on the Growth of the Movement.

This is the second consecutive year that the Secretary General has brought together executive staff teams from the Central and Regional Offices to share and form a think tank, providing the necessary synergies to perform WOSM's secretariat functions effectively. For Luc Panissod, it was important that the executive staff work together on the"consultancy" and 「service-oriented」 approach in order to focus on the best ways of responding to the needs of National Scout Organizations.

The week began and ended with meetings of the Regional Directors and the Executive Directors from the Central Office led by the Secretary General. When joined by the other executives, the larger group worked on defining the World Scout Bureau's mission and its implementation, on inputs for a human resources policy, as well as on the institutional corporate culture that is seen as an essential ingredient of success. The importance of this had been expressed by World Scout Committee Chairman Rick Cronk in a personal message sent to the participants.

The middle of the week was built around thematic meetings, bringing together teams from the Educational Methods, Scouting's Profile and Finance departments. Some time was also allotted to working on the World Scout Bureau's support to World Scout Events.

An evaluation conducted at the end of the meeting concluded that this had been a very successful event and that that similar meetings should be held on a regular basis, including training segments, debates and programme elaboration. On this basis, plans are already being made to hold a similar meeting next year, also at Kandersteg International Scout Centre.

Due to the disruption in air traffic in Europe, some regional teams managed to take advantage of the situation and have further coordination meetings before returning to their home offices. Latest new indicate that everyone reached home safely.
