Latest news from Haiti

Four months after the earthquake, here is some news from our Haitian friends. For the past few weeks they have been working on defining their actions in the context of their country's reconstruction phase.

In partnership with the State, local and international entities, as well as families, the National Association of the Scouts of Haiti (NASH), has put its logistical and educational experience at the service of the communities. On the field, they encourage children to return to school by running workshops, sociocultural activities and initiation to first-aid which has been contributing to the reduction of the psychological traumas caused by the disaster.

End of March, NASH has prepared its quinquennial plan with the support of Dominique Bénard, former assistant Secretary General of WOSM, who traveled to the country. The plan is articulated around six objectives:

1 - Contribute to improving the lives of victims, in particular those of children and youth.

2 - Participate in the development of a National System of Civil Protection.

3 – Contribute to the fight against poverty, social exclusion and the exodus of young people.

4 - Contribute to the overhaul of the educational system.

5 - Contribute to the establishment of an effective youth policy.

6 - Implement the necessary means to ensure the success of the plan, develop financial independence of NASH and implement an effective system of governance and transparency.

The whole plan is accompanied by a complete list of precise actions to be implemented. This five-year plan will be supported by the financial contributions gathered by the World Scout Bureau, the "Scouts et Guides de France" and the "Scouts du Canada", for a grand total to date of approximately 740'000 CHF.

Regarding the Scout cooperation, it should be noted that the "Scouts et Guides de France" sent three volunteer specialists, for long term mission, in order to support NASH in the implementation of its plan: a program coordinator, an engineer and a specialist in civil security. In partnership with UNICEF, NASH is seeking housing solutions for 200,000 people in anticipation of the rainy season, which begins in a month's time. In this respect the camping material sent by the Boy Scouts of America will be very useful for organizing camps for displaced persons.

Additionally a fish farming operation in the Azuei lake region was launched thanks to the help of the Thai Scout Foundation.
