International Centres Day 2009

Never heard of the International Centre Day? It’s something to do with the Goose Network. Never heard of the Goose Network? Okay, then read on! The Goose Network is, well, a network! A network of Staff, not managers or directors, at Scout and Guide Centres in Europe. The aim is to share ideas on the environment, nature and culture. The network meets once at a year at one of the many Centres around Europe.

The International Centre Day is a competition run by the Goose Network between the Goose Network Centres. The competition has taken various different forms and involved either Scouts and Guides visiting these Centres or just the Staff at these Centres. In both 2008 and 2009 the competition has been mainly for Staff at the Centres but there has also been some enthusiastic involvement of visiting Scouts. There are various tasks to be completed and these are submitted online (photos, videos, documents, etc.) so they can be judged. It also gives everyone an idea of what they are competing against.

The International Centre Day 2009 was on the 29th of July and the 7 tasks were all related to Green – the environment, not the colour! However, to make things a bit more fun the tasks had to be completed with a particular theme, and that was “Colour Blind”. At 08:00 the tasks were released to the participating Centres. Kandersteg International Scout Centre, Houens Odde, Buitenzord Scout Centre, Our Chalet, Pax Lodge, Bucher Berg and Pax Lodge each set to work and had until 17:00 to complete tasks such as creating an image of their Centre logo from recycled materials or cook using only the power of the sun. Despite being spread out all over Europe everyone was competing on the same tasks. In the afternoon, as the 17:00 deadline approached the entries were uploaded to the website. The entries were of a very high quality and it proves what Scouts can do in a very short period of time. However, there had to be a winner and after much deliberation Buitenzorg was announced as the International Centre Day 2009 Winner.

The current Goose Network consists of the following centres across Europe: Apulia Scout Centre (PT), Belchamps Scout Centre (UK), BP-park (IT), Bucher Berg (DE), Burg Rieneck (DE), Domaine de Mozet (BE), Houens Odde Scout Centre (DK), Ingelsrud Scoutcentre (NO), Kandersteg International Scout Centre (CH), Kopparbo (SE), Merkenveld (BE), Nasbycentret (DK), Pfadfinderdorf Zellhof (AT), Scoutcentrum Buitenzorg (NL), Scout Centre Rotterdam (NL), and Vassaro Scout Centre (SE).
